GILBERT, Ariz. -– A man was shot and killed by Gilbert police officers after he allegedly robbed a bank, carjacked a vehicle and led police on a pursuit Tuesday morning.
A Gilbert police spokesman said the man robbed a Bank of America at Power and Baseline roads just after 9 a.m. then fled on a bicycle.
The suspect later stole a pickup truck from the parking lot of a Goodwill store near Signal Butte Road and Main Street in Mesa.
Police initiated a pursuit during which the pickup truck rammed a Gilbert officer's unmarked SUV. At some point, one of the stolen vehicle's tires blew and the suspect was driving on three tires.
Officers cornered the suspect at an apartment complex near Crismon and Broadway roads in Mesa where the truck collided with another police SUV. The suspect exited the vehicle with a handgun and attempted to flee on foot.
A short foot pursuit ensued and two Gilbert officers fired their weapons in response to a lethal threat by the suspect, according to Sgt. Jesse Sanger.
Officers on scene performed CPR, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified him as Harold Lynn Phelps, 57.
The officer involved in the collision was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
