PHOENIX -- A suspected drunk driver who refused to stop for police is in the hospital after hitting a dump truck filled with gravel. It happened near Interstate 17 and 19th Avenue.

According to police, officers tried to stop the suspect at 15th Avenue and Roeser Road, but he did not pull over, speeding away instead. He did not get very far.

Officers did not initiate a pursuit. They called for air support and the chopper was moments from launching when the suspect hit the dump truck about 2.5 miles from where police tried to stop him.

That dump truck was carrying 18 tons of rock.

The driver said he was making a left turn off the freeway when the speeding car slammed into him. He told 3TV's Javier Soto that he barely felt the impact on his fully loaded truck.

Video from the scene showed the severe damage to the front of the suspect's car. The impact was hard enough that debris from the car actually was embedded in the side truck's wheels.

While the driver of the dump truck was not injured, the suspect suffered a broken leg, a broken arm and a collapsed lung.

The suspect, who has not been identified, will be taken into custody as soon as doctors release him.
