SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Surprise woman on animal abuse charges Wednesday afternoon.
The sheriff's office said an adult female dog belonging to Lucila C. Tellez, 62, was found severely emaciated and suffering from an acute case of dermatitis over most of her body. Her skin was bleeding and crusting, and she had edema and tick fever.
The dog has received veterinary treatment and is under the care of the sheriff's MASH Unit, which was established to nurse neglected animals back to health so they can be adopted.
Tellez was charged with one count each of animal cruelty and failure to provide necessary medical attention.
"This abuse in this case is disturbing," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement. "The suspect who neglected this dog will have to answer for her cruelty."
