CHANDLER, Ariz. -- It's one thing to simply make a sandwich. It's a whole other thing to become a sandwich artist. But that's what you are if you work at Subway!
And this weekend, the best of the best will be competing to see who among them is the fastest sandwich slinger in the West.
It's the Subjammer Statewide Competition! Armed with a few simple ingredients – lettuce, tomatoes, turkey, some pickles, olives and a little seasoning – Subway sandwich artists must rely on their hands and quick wit to create the perfect sandwich, in less than 60 seconds.
The statewide contest tests Subway sandwich artists’ on their speed, sandwich appearance, ingredient distribution, and accuracy.
"It's exactly the same sandwich every year," says Subjammer 2013 champ, Nitasha Truss. "My time last year was 46.6."
In less than 60 seconds, each competitor will make a foot-long turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, pickles, olives and oil according to the Subway Restaurants operations manual. The fastest time will earn the winning sandwich artist special prizes.
The local Subway champ goes on to the global competition each summer. In 2012 and 2013, an Arizona sandwich artist took home the crown -- Sal Rodriguez in 2012 and Truss in 2013.And his year, Nitasha says she's going for a "three-peat."
"A little nervous," she says. "But I got this!"
