PHOENIX -- The start of the school year is just around the corner for most Phoenix-area students. That means the summer vacation season is coming to an end. But there is still time to sneak in a quick getaway in the next few weeks.
Marjorie Magnusson from the Arizona Office of Tourism suggests four areas in Arizona that offer plenty of activities and fun.
The White Mountains: The whole family will love the cool, crisp air of the White Mountains in Eastern Arizona. It is the perfect location for hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing, horseback riding and swimming. It is also home to Sunrise Park Resort, a year-round recreational destination. The temperatures in the White Mountains are typically 20- to 30-degrees cooler than the Valley.
Lake Powell: Northern Arizona's vibrant Lake Powell is the ultimate aquatic playground for families and groups. The beautiful scenery that surrounds the lake is breathtaking. Houseboats and personal watercraft are available for rental.
Tombstone: Head to Southern Arizona to retrace the steps of infamous Wild West characters like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Visitors can see daily reenactments of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Williams: Take the kids to Bearizona, a drive-through wildlife park with giant bison, big-horn sheep, wolves and bear cubs. Downtown Williams, which is along the historic Route 66, boasts great shops and restaurants. Visitors can also take a train ride from the Williams Depot to the Grand Canyon for the day.
