PHOENIX -- Police are searching for a man who stabbed and critically wounded another man outside a Phoenix apartment complex Friday morning.

According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department, a man and a woman were walking in the area, heading to the complex in the area of 16th Avenue and Pierson Street, which is south of Camelback Road, at about 6:15 a.m.

A man was following the pair, making unwanted advances toward the woman. The man who was with the woman told the suspect to go away, but he continued to follow and harass them.

When the pair arrived at the apartment complex, the woman went inside while the man went to talk to the suspect in another effort to make him go away.

"Something happened during that conversation, and the man who was following them stabbed the other man," Thompson said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was stabbed several times is in critical condition at a local hospital.

The suspect is a Hispanic man, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He has a slender build and was wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, as well as a red or orange button-up shirt over a white T-shirt.

"We think that with that description, even though we recovered the cowboy hat, we think that somebody out there probably knows who we're talking about," Thompson said. "We need that information."

The suspect left the scene on foot but might have had a car parked in the neighborhood.

"We think there's a good chance that he's probably from this area because he followed them on foot," Thompson said.

It is not clear how victim and the woman with whom he was walking are connected or if either of them know the suspect.

"We just don't know," Thompson said. "We're trying to put that together at this time."

Thompson some witness were "a little bit less than forthcoming."
