LODI, Calif. -- An item on a Oakdale, California woman's bucket list turned into a near-death experience.

Laverne Everett, 80, decided to go skydiving for her birthday in May of last year, but something went terribly wrong.

She was seconds away from jumping out of a plane when she experienced problems with her harness.
Everett was left dangling in mid-air -- and survived.

Now she's talking about an experience she'll never forget.

Everett, said she craves a little excitement once in awhile, so last year, for her 80th birthday she decided to jump out of a plane.

"It's just something I've wanted to do for a long time." explained Everett.

Last May, Everett did just that, at Parachute Center in Acampo, Calif.

"Once you get on that edge that's another story. My upper harness came off. You know, it just slipped down," Everett said as she described her near-death experience.

Everett said her shirt flew up against her face -- she couldn't see a thing.

"I didn't know anything. Only to hold on. That's all," said Everett.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the incident.

Meantime, Everett said it's time to cross another item off her bucket list. "Well I have never ridden in a race car."
