SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. – A Sierra Vista man was arrested on child abuse charges after two babies were found to have fractures, according to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.
Steven-Michael Rothbauer, 21, was booked on two counts of child abuse, two counts of endangerment and four counts of aggravated assault. He is being held on a $150,000 bond.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said a 19-year-old woman took her 3-month-old son to a Tucson hospital to be treated for fractured ribs, which had been detected on an X-ray when the child's pediatrician examined him Tuesday morning. The woman said the child had been violently ill over the weekend.
Hospital X-rays showed broken ribs, a broken arm and several skull fractures in various stages of healing, according to Capas.
The mother could not explain the injuries.
She said the baby's twin brother was staying with family friends in Tucson and medical staff requested she bring the child to the hospital for evaluation.
Capas said X-rays showed that the second child also had a skull fracture.
The mother told sheriff's detectives that her boyfriend watches the children sometimes and he stayed with them on Saturday while she went shopping.
Detectives interviewed Rothbauer and took him into custody.
The sheriff's office is still investigating.
