MESA, Ariz. -- A man who held police at bay for hours Tuesday morning surrendered himself to Mesa's SWAT team, bringing a peaceful end to a standoff that started after a shooting Monday night.

According to police, officers followed the suspect from the shooting scene near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road to the Cypress Commons apartments in the area of Country Club Drive and Eighth Street.

The man, later identified as Chadler S. Chow, holed up in his upstairs apartment for about two hours, reportedly telling officers on the scene that he did not want to go back to jail.

Negotiators eventually were able to talk Chow out of the apartment. He was taken into custody without further incident shortly before 7 a.m.

Chow was booked on two counts of aggravated assault

Police said Chow and the shooting victim knew each other and had been involved in an argument Monday night. During the confrontation, Chow produced a weapon and fired it, hitting the victim.

The victim was taken to a local hospital. His injuries were believed to be non life-threatening.

No injuries were reported in the course of the standoff.
