GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Police have identified a maintenance worker who was shot at an apartment complex in Glendale on Tuesday.
Glendale police said Douglas Elliott, 50, was on duty at the time of the shooting in the parking lot of the apartment complex near 65th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
Elliott, a resident of Peoria, was shot at least once and died at a hospital, according to police.
"Very friendly, generous guy," said Jarvous Washington. "He'd do his best to help everybody. He was always on time; everybody knows him."
The motive of the shooting is unknown, but police do not believe it was random.
"We believe there's some sort of relationship or history between the victim and the suspects," said Sgt. Jay O'Neill of the Glendale Police Department.
Neighbors said they heard several gunshots.
"We heard pop, pop, pop, pop, and we were sitting there playing cards, we like that ain't no firecrackers," said resident Carlos Hawk.
Police said the suspects, two black men, drove off in an older model, dark sedan headed east.
Police believe that one of the suspects may have sustained some type of injury during the incident.
No one else at the apartment complex was injured. However, the complex was packed full of people at the time. Sevonne Dunn said his children and grandmother took cover upon hearing the sound of gunfire.
"She had them lay on the floor below the window like we were taught because I grew up in this area," explained Dunn, who said violence in the neighborhood is nothing new.
"It's scary, but it's something I've been through as a kid," Dunn said. "It's a reality of my life."
Glendale police said the area is considered a designated hot spot. The apartment complex where the shooting occurred hired a security guard following the incident to patrol 24 hours a day for an unknown period of time.
Detectives are seeking the public's help identifying and locating the suspects. Anyone with information on this case, to include the identity of the suspects, is asked to call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3399 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
