DETROIT (AP) -- A federal agent killed during a gun battle near the Arizona-Mexico border has been praised as a hero during a funeral service in Detroit.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says 40-year-old Brian A. Terry "put service before self." She was the final speaker Wednesday at Greater Grace Temple.
Terry was fatally shot while tracking an organized gang Dec. 14 in a canyon just north of Mexico. Four bandits were arrested.
Napolitano says the bandits tracked by Terry's team typically rob drug smugglers or illegal immigrants making their way into the U.S.
Terry had served in the Marines and was a police officer in suburban Detroit joining the border patrol in 2007. He is survived by his mother, father, a brother and two sisters.
