PHOENIX -- Sen. John McCain played host to a full audience full of questions at his latest town hall meeting Monday in Phoenix.. His work with the so-called "Gang of Eight" congressmen dealing with immigration reform dominated the discussion.

"First of all, it's a very emotional issue and it's emotional on both sides of the issue," McCain said. "I understand that emotion."

Both sides of the argument for and against immigration reform made their presence known. Critics of McCain's work to find a better path to a green card questioned whether or not he's giving amnesty to millions.

"Senator McCain doesn't understand we're bringing poverty to this country and like Mexico, we're going to be a Third World country!" Anna Gaines said.

But many from the Latino outreach group Mi Familia Vota attended to show appreciation to the senator for leading on the issue. Several asked when they could expect to see a bill from the "Gang of Eight," but McCain seemed to downplay reports that their consensus is right around the corner.

"Whether we will agree or not, I do not know," he said. "I am guardedly optimistic, but I cannot stand before you and commit that we will reach it, much less give you a time or date it would be reached."
