MESA, Ariz. – Two people are dead and two others are seriously injured after a collision in east Mesa Wednesday morning.

Mesa police spokesman Detective Steve Berry said a northbound SUV and a southbound car collided on Ellsworth Road between Ray and Warner roads.

The SUV rolled over and caught on fire. Two people in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people in the car were transported to a local hospital. Their injuries were listed as very serious.

Investigators are still trying to determine what happened.

"At this point, we don't know what caused one vehicle or the other to cross over the median," Berry said. "We don't know if someone had a medical condition, intoxication, just lack of attention. All those things are things that we'll try and determine through the investigation."

Berry did not know if anyone was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Police have not identified any of the people involved in the crash.
