PHOENIX -- Phoenix police closed a busy freeway on-ramp during the height of Friday's evening rush hour to investigate a robbery that led to shots being fired at officers.

Sgt. Steve Martos said that a jewelry store, Watch N Save Jewelers, near 45th Street and Thomas Road was robbed in broad daylight. One of the suspects became locked inside the store and had to shoot his way out through a window, according to witnesses.

No one was injured in the busy strip mall, which includes Costco and a Target store.

The suspects then fled to nearby State Route 51 where shots were fired at pursuing officers on the on-ramp, which is next to Phoenix Children's Hospital. No one was injured, but at least one patrol car window was hit with a round.

Police said the fleeing vehicle got on the Loop 202 freeway and eluded officers.

Investigators believed they found the getaway car, an older model Chevy Monte Carlo, in an apartment complex near Loop 202 and 44th Street Friday night. There was no sign of the suspects, who were described as Hispanic males in their 20s.

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
