MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police have one man in custody and are searching for another man suspected of stealing rims from a tire business near Broadway Road and Center Street on Monday.
Several employees at the Llantera Tire Business confronted the suspects as they were loading their vehicle with rims that had not been paid for, according to police.
One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the employees and told them to get back. The suspects then jumped in the vehicle and fled southbound on Center Street.
Police spokesman Detective Steve Berry said within minutes the suspects sold one of the rims as scrap metal at a scrapyard near Southern Avenue and Center Street.
The employees at the tire business were able to give police a description and license plate of the vehicle. Berry said officers tracked down the vehicle's owner, Gabriel Madrid, and took him into custody. He reportedly admitted to the crime.
Madrid, 35, faces charges of trafficking stolen property and aggravated robbery.
Police are trying to locate the second suspect described as a bald Hispanic male, 21 to 30 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 150 to 180 pounds, with brown eyes and letter tattoos above and below his left eye. He was wearing a gray or red T-shirt and blue shorts. He had a yellow Arizona State University lanyard hanging from his back pocket and a green lanyard hanging from his neck.
Anyone with information about the outstanding suspect is asked to contact the Mesa Police Department.
