PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a Prescott Valley man has been scammed out of $8,700 by someone who claimed to be a woman stranded in Nigeria without a passport or money.

Yavapai County Sheriff's officials say the person befriended the 64-year-old man by email before asking for financial help.

They say the man wired $1,000 to the scam artist on July 2, then sent three additional money transfers including one of $6,000.

The person posing as the stranded traveler asked for an additional $4,000 on July 11.

Before acting on that request, the man informed his wife of the financial help and she contacted sheriff's officials about the situation.

The man's name hasn't been released.

He and his wife asked sheriff's investigators to share their story so others won't be similarly scammed.
