PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – A Prescott Valley man was fatally shot when a gun discharged as his wife was handing it to him, according to police.
Gary Wingate, 56, was shot in the couple's home Monday afternoon.
His 54-year-old wife told Prescott Valley police officers that Wingate wanted her to hand him a 12-gauge shotgun that the couple had, according to police spokesman Sgt. Brandon Bonney.
She told investigators that she was not comfortable handling a firearm but did what her husband asked.
The gun discharged and struck Wingate in the upper torso.
Emergency personnel responded to the home and Wingate was pronounced dead on scene.
Police continue to investigate the man's death but said it appears to be an accident. The medical examiner will have to rule on the cause and manner of death.
