PHOENIX – Hundreds of Valley postal workers rallied Tuesday in hopes of preventing massive cuts and layoffs.

Saturday mail delivery is at risk, along with 11 Arizona post offices and possibly thousands of jobs.

Tuesday night an estimated 300 members of the Postal Union gathered outside of Arizona Congressman Jeff Flake's office in Mesa.

They're hoping Flake will co-sign a bill in Congress which the union believes will save jobs and services.

The union believes the Postal Retirement System is the problem behind the USPS' staggering debt.

By law, the post office must pre-fund retirement benefits 75 years in advance.

"That pays retirement for people who aren't even born yet," said union member JoAnn Gerhart, "No other agency is burdened with that."

The union is behind House Bill 1351, which would reform the USPS retirement system, and, they believe, would relieve much of the agency's debt.
