PHOENIX -- April 15 is Tax Day and for those who waited until the last minute to file returns, the United States Post Office will accommodate them with extended hours.
Post offices across the Valley will be open late for any procrastinators who need their taxes filed Tuesday.
The post office near Van Buren and 49th streets will be open until 9:30 p.m. It will also operate a drive-through satellite location at Phoenix Municipal Stadium near Priest Drive and Washington Street that is open until 9:30 p.m. as well.
Employees there anticipate more than 1,000 people arriving to drop off their returns, with the longest waits after 5 p.m. Julie Utley of the post office recommends going to USPS.com/taxes to prepare a package and print postage to save time.
Anyone who misses the 9:30 p.m. closing time can still mail a return by using an automated kiosk available inside the post office.
For those who cannot file Tuesday, there are other options. Shauna Wekherlein, an accountant, says you can file an extension by midnight by filling out Form 4868 on the federal level and Form 204 on the Arizona state level. However, you must still pay by midnight if you owe money on your returns.
