PHOENIX -- Police believe a 16-year-old was impaired and driving a stolen vehicle when he caused an accident Saturday morning.

The teen was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer northbound on 91st Avenue at a high rate of speed when he ran a red light at Lower Buckeye Road.

He proceeded to collide with a Ford Focus that was being driven by a 20-year-old woman.

The Mitsubishi rolled at least twice, and one of the passengers was ejected. That person is said to be in extremely critical condition.

The 16-year-old and a second passenger in the Mitsubishi sustained serious injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.

The woman in the Ford Focus was also injured, but her injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.

Police continue to investigate the crash, but they said it appears as if the 16-year-old and his passengers had stolen the Mitsubishi. They said it also appears as if the teen was under the influence of alcohol.

Charges in the case are pending.
