TEMPE, Ariz. – Police are searching for a 33-year-old man following a double shooting in Tempe Tuesday afternoon.
Police officers responded to a call of shots fired at a townhome complex near Rural and Guadalupe roads at approximately 2:30 p.m.
John Brazel and Charla Faust apparently were engaged in a domestic violence incident, according to Tempe police spokeswoman Molly Enright. Brazel became physically aggressive with the 33-year-old woman and a neighboring resident attempted to intervene.
Enright said Brazel shot the good Samaritan then shot Faust and fled the area.
Faust was pronounced dead. The male victim was treated at the scene then transported to a local hospital.
Neighbors said Faust was a mother of three young children.
"She was a great mom. She did anything for her kids; her kids were No. 1 to her," said Kathy Abuelhawa, a friend of the victim. "Her kids aren't going to have a mom anymore."
Neighbors said the suspect was an ex-boyfriend of Faust and told 3TV the victim even had a restraining order against him.
"He's a dangerous man. I can't believe he was allowed to stay next door," Abuelhawa said.
Multiple neighbors said Brazel was spotted staying with a friend within the same complex despite the restraining order.
"We know that he's been suspected of domestic violence on multiple occasions and has had the cops there at the house on multiple occasions," said neighbor Nate Roush.
Tempe police confirm a history of domestic violence calls and said it's believed Faust did have a restraining order against Brazel. 3TV is still trying to confirm information with the courts.
"It could have been prevented," said Abuelhawa, grieving her friend Tuesday night. "We've been trying to get him away from that place for a long time."
"I considered them an extension of my family," said Abuelhawa's husband, Raul Varela. "Now that she's gone ... her children ... I'm concerned for her kids right now."
Tempe police continue to search for Brazel. He's believed to be driving a 1998 white Chevy Tahoe with Arizona license plate BDY6785. Police said he is known to frequent the mountains and is an avid camper.
Call Tempe police if you see the vehicle. Do not contact the suspect.
