PHOENIX -- Police have released the name of a man who was killed during an altercation outside a home in North Phoenix earlier this month.
Adam Matte Gewargis, 27, was shot and killed by his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend on August 1, according to Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Dept.
The man who shot Gewargis told police he did it in self-defense.
Investigators said Gewargis went with his girlfriend to the home near Cave Creek and Lone Mountain roads to collect some of her possessions.
"She arrives there with the new boyfriend," said Sgt. Steve Martos. "The ex-boyfriend is there at home with a now new roommate. There was some altercation that occurred out in the driveway of the home."
Sgt. Martos said the 20-year-old ex-boyfriend and 53-year-old roommate were armed at that time.
The ex-boyfriend then took the weapons inside the home. That is when Gewargis and the ex-boyfriend's roommate got into a physical altercation.
"During that altercation the new boyfriend [Gewargis] is seen or observed stabbing the roommate with a knife and it is at that point that the ex-boyfriend returns back inside the house and returns with a handgun and shoots and kills the new boyfriend," explained Sgt. Martos.
The ex-boyfriend told police the shooting was in defense of his roommate who was stabbed by Gewargis. The roommate did survive the stabbing.
Police are still investigating and will submit the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's office for review.
