MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- A man entered a Vietnamese restaurant in a strip mall Thursday evening and fatally shot a woman before killing himself, police said.

Mesa police received multiple 911 calls from Phu Thanh Restaurant just before 6 p.m. and arriving officers found the pair dead of apparent gunshot wounds, said Detective Steve Berry, a police spokesman. The dead man and woman apparently were in some type of relationship, but it was unclear if they were restaurant owners, employees or customers, he said. Their names were not released.

Another woman suffered a gunshot wound to her lower body and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Berry said. He said he didn't know if she was a target or was inadvertently caught in the gunfire.

The shooting occurred in a Vietnamese restaurant near Southern Avenue and Extension Road.

The restaurant was open at the time, but diners inside were able to make their way out, Berry said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the shooting, as customers, including  a mother with children, ran out of the restaurant.

"I ran outside to see what was going on, and she said, 'gun, gun; help there's a gun," said Rudy Tellez who works at the nearby Barber shop.   "I ran out and grabbed the babies, she had two kids with her. I grabbed babies and took them to the shop."

Tellez said he then tried to help a woman, believed to be a waitress, who was also shot, but expected to be okay.

"I saw a lady holding her hip. I asked her what had just gone on, and she said she had just gotten shot by the guy," said Tellez.  "When I walked over back, he had shot himself...he was dead on the ground."

Berry said officers were in the beginning stages of their investigation, and he didn't immediately release any details other than saying there are no outstanding suspects.
