PHOENIX -- Police say a man killed in a New Year's Eve car wreck was fleeing from a traffic stop when he crashed.

Just before 10 p.m., Phoenix Police officers stopped a 2005 four-door Cadillac near 44th Street and McDowell Road.

Phoenix Police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said both the driver and passenger had outstanding warrants.

The passenger, 26-year-old Jeffery D. Ruiz, allegedly would not comply with the officers' commands. Thompson said Ruiz then pushed the driver out of the car, got behind the wheel and fled east on McDowell Road at a high speed.

According to Thompson, the car went off the roadway and rolled near 54th Street before officers could get close enough to try to stop it.

Ruiz was ejected from the Cadillac and died at the scene, Thompson said.
