PHOENIX -- A Phoenix woman is facing child-abuse charges after allegedly having sexual contact with a 2-year-old male relative.

Officers were called to the home of Rickesha Jovani Burns Sunday night. According to Officer James Holmes, police arrived to find Burns "hysterical." The child, who was in Burns' arms, was crying and bleeding from his bottom.

The child was immediately transported to a local hospital where doctors discovered a foreign object inside the boy, as well as other rectal injuries.

Holmes said Burns told officers that she had taken the boy to a park earlier in the day and that he had been playing with an unidentified 12-year-old boy.

"Ms. Burns said she had taken her eye off the baby for just seconds when the baby started to cry, indicating the male had done something to the child," Holmes said in an email to media outlets.

Holmes said detectives developed probable cause to arrest Burns on suspicion of sexual conduct with a minor and child abuse, both of which are felony charges.

"Police found no evidence that the child had been assaulted at the aforementioned park," Holmes said, although he did not elaborate on what led officers to arrest Burns.

The child was scheduled for surgery to remove that object. His prognosis was not immediately available.

The investigation is ongoing.
