AVONDALE, Ariz. -- A man accidentally shot his 11-year-old daughter in the leg Thursday afternoon while cleaning his gun, police said.

It occurred at the family's home near Dysart and Indian School roads in Avondale.

Police said the man was cleaning his firearm in the garage when it went off. The bullet traveled through the home and grazed his daughter's leg.

The father, who neighbors said is a military veteran, apparently kept the gun in a safe in the garage.

Authorities said the girl was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital with minor injuries.

"It's always terrifying to hear of a child just being injured from cleaning a weapon," said neighbor Brynn Kowalski.

Concerned neighbors said families were in the park next door to the home at the time.

"If his shotgun could go through the wall of his house, what's to say it couldn't go through the wall toward the park?" said neighbor Tawsha Minicheski.

Avondale police are still investigating the incident, and say the father could face charges.
