YOUNG, Ariz. -- The Poco fire in the Tonto National Forest continues to grow.

The blaze covers approximately 3,100 acres, and there are now 490 fire personnel battling the flames.

Firefighters spent Sunday working to protect the 500 kV electric transmission lines to the east of the fire.

The elements continue to pose a problem for firefighters, as they work on steep slopes and in hot temperatures. They were also on alert for thunderstorms and lightning strikes on Sunday.

If the weather allows, firefighters might initiate a burnout operation to remove fuels to the east around the power lines and secure firelines.

Forest Road 512 remains closed while crews “mop up” the fire along the south edge between FR 291 and FR 200. A portion of the ranger district is also closed east of FR 200, south of FR 291 and north of FR 512.

The Poco fire began burning about six miles northeast of the town of Young on Thursday. It is 15 percent contained.
