CAMP VERDE, Ariz. – A Phoenix woman died and her husband was injured in a crash in Camp Verde Saturday evening.

Yavapai County sheriff's deputies responded to the accident on Fossil Creek Road approximately 19 miles from Highway 260 just before 6 p.m.

The couple's 2001 white Isuzu Rodeo was found about 100 feet from the dirt road down along a hillside.

Camp Verde Fire Department personnel pronounced Stephanie Steel, 30, dead on scene. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

William Jordon, 36, was treated by paramedics and then flown to a Phoenix hospital.

Jordon told the deputies that his wife was the driver of the vehicle. He said they had driven from Phoenix and intended on camping at the Verde Hot Springs near the Childs Campground. He said when road conditions became difficult, Steel was unable to prevent their vehicle from going over the side and crashing.

Jordon admitted that they weren't wearing seat belts.

Deputies found open beer cans in and around the vehicle at the crash site, according to Dwight D'Evelyn with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators are working to verify the driver of the vehicle and specific causal factors.
