PHOENIX – Phoenix police have identified a woman who was killed in an apartment fire last week.

Sgt. Trent Crump said Patricia Ferrell, 68, died in a fire at her second-floor unit at the Paradise Palms 2 apartments near Central and Southern avenues.

Dozens of fire units were called to the apartment complex at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Phoenix fire Capt. Tony Muir, several neighbors tried to save Ferrell.

One person used a rock to break the front window. Other people grabbed fire extinguishers and tried to knock down the flames while still others pried open a locked security door to get to the woman.

Ferrell was lying on the floor by the front door and they dragged her out of the burning apartment.

Despite the efforts of the neighbors and paramedics, Ferrell died.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
