PHOENIX -- Police found $500,000 worth of marijuana in a home on Thursday morning after they responded to a report of gunfire.

Police said the shooting occurred during an attempted robbery at the marijuana stash house.

"Once they identified the house they began searching around that particular area and as conducting their search located an assault rifle in the garbage bin in the alley behind the house," said Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Dept.

"I’ve never seen people at that house," said neighbor Guillermo Rosas. "It was always quiet around here never think something happened like that.”

But the neighborhood near 45th Avenue and Thomas Road was anything but quiet when shortly after 4 a.m. multiple shots rang out.

"We didn't want to look outside because we were afraid people were doing a drive by," said neighbor Melissa Ramirez.

Officers checked the home and found no one inside. However, the home wasn't empty.

"Once they made entry they found no one injured or harmed or shot however while in the house they located one-thousand to twelve-hundred pounds of marijuana." said Sgt. Martos.

Police estimate the marijuana has a street value of $500,000.

"We come across these stash houses time to time," said Sgt. Martos. "You talk about 500 thousand dollars here but obviously as it gets further back east or into the U.S. it gets much more expensive."

By the time police arrived everyone was gone from the home. All that was left was the marijuana.

Neighbors surprised by the stash house are just glad it's gone now.

Police do not have anyone in custody connected to the crime.

Anyone with information is urged to call Phoenix Police.
