PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities say a Phoenix woman and her live-in boyfriend are in custody on suspicion of child abuse.
Phoenix police say several children were rescued from inside a house that was covered with filth, rotting food and dog feces.
Arizona Department of Child Safety workers say they went to the home Monday afternoon to investigate a child neglect complaint that the children had been left alone.
The workers told police they could hear children's voices inside but nobody answered the door.
Police say they could smell rotting food and feces from outside the home and saw barking dogs running around inside.
Officers forced their way inside and discovered the children's 24-year-old mother Ashlee Carleton and 26-year-old Casey Deryke.
Both are accused of three counts of child abuse. Neither has a lawyer.
