PHOENIX (AP) -- A Phoenix man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the shooting death of his friend has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokesman says 21-year-old Joe Autry Colter was sentenced Friday by Judge Bruce Cohen.

Police say the shooting occurred June 12 in a Glendale apartment where Colter was handling his handgun.

Investigators say Colter believed he was ejecting a round from his gun's chamber but another bullet in fact moved into the chamber.

He then pointed the gun at the victim and expected to hear "click" when he pulled the trigger.

Instead, Colter shot his friend, fatally wounding him.

Defense attorney Lindsay Abramson has said Colter didn't intend to kill his friend.
