PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man accused of killing his 13-year-old son with an ax pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning.

Gary Reagan Sherrill, 51, is charged with first-degree murder. He is being held on $1 million bond.

David Sherrill's mom sent police to her ex-husband's home near Maryland Avenue and 12th Street after he picked the teen up for scheduled visitation but never returned him to her.

Police discovered David's body inside the home. Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said he had been stabbed and cut several times.

According to court paperwork, Sherrill said he hit his son with an ax three or four times.

Officers searched the residence and found the ax and other cutting implements.

Martos said Sherrill told officers that he believed his son was a demon and was going to eat him.

His next court date is March 3.
