PHOENIX -- Bond is set at $50,000 for a Phoenix man accused of punching his live-in girlfriend several times and leaving her with a broken jaw and nose.
Phoenix police say 38-year-old Hassan Kevin Corbin was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping and aggravated assault - all class two felonies.
Corbin had his initial court appearance Friday. He doesn't have a lawyer yet and is facing an April 7 preliminary hearing.
Police say neighbors reported hearing a man yelling death threats from inside an apartment near 36th Street and McDowell Road and then saw a woman with severe facial wounds yelling for help.
Witnesses told police they saw Corbin allegedly grab the woman by her hair and pull her back inside.
Police say Corbin later told them the assault was in self-defense because the woman had pulled his hair.
The woman reportedly told police he attacked her for no apparent reason.
According to court documents, Corbin is awaiting trial for a different aggravated assault charge and has a history of domestic violence. He has reportedly committed multiple violent crimes over the past two decades.
