PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man is accused of child abuse after a baby in his care was hospitalized with bruising and skull fractures.

Bond was set at $25,000 for Saul Garcia at his initial court appearance Thursday.

The 25-year-old Garcia was arrested in the case Tuesday and booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail. He doesn't have a lawyer yet.

The baby was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital on April 13.

His mother said Garcia accidentally dropped the boy when the family dog tripped him while he was attempting to burp the child. According to court records, she gave multiple accounts of what happened that day.

Garcia told police that he was trying to hold the baby with his left hand while attempting to put food into their dog's bowl with his right hand.

But doctors say the fall didn't correlate with all the injuries the baby sustained.

The baby's mother also had injuries to her face but was inconsistent in her explanation of how she got them, according to court documents.

Garcia has been on probation for domestic violence/assault, according to the documents.

He is being charged with one count of child abuse, a class four felony.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 16.
