Woman hit by multiple vehicles on I-17 after jumping from car

PHOENIX - A fatality on Interstate 17 resulted in the freeway being shut down for much of the late morning and afternoon near the accident scene at Thomas Road.

Lt. Robert Lee Bailey said at about 10:15 a.m. the Department of Public Safety received a call of a person who fell out of their vehicle and on to the roadway on the northbound lanes of the I-17 under the Grand Avenue overpass near the HOV lane.

According to DPS the woman was stuck by one vehicle and that vehicle was rear-ended by a utility truck.

DPS confirmed the Phoenix woman had just lost custody of her children and apparently committed suicide by jumping out of the back seat of a crew-cab truck she was riding in with her mother and sister.

The woman has been identified as Brenda Suzanne Ownby, 36. She died on scene.

According to Ownby's family she had been quiet and hadn't said much after leaving court before the incident.

The freeway re-opened just before 2:30 p.m.

OMG... This is so sad. That poor, poor mother and sister will have to live with that for the rest of their lives, not to mention the poor people that hit her. Such a selfish act that hurt so many people! Truely heartbreaking!!

Hell yes! Another quitter is helping bring the surplus population down. Honestly, if she was so eager to conmmit Harey-Carey, then maybe we have the reason that CPS has taken the kids. Hopefully they will be O.K. and at least they didm't have to witness it like the poor drivers on the 17 and this rocket scientists family.

Who said anything about CPS??? Pay attention JIM! Evilbetty just assumed that it was CPS read the above statement in this article.. wait hold on, I'll make it easy for you.. (DPS "comfirmed"), only CPS or the legal system can remove kids from homes.

it coulda been the father of the children who got custody either way its just sad. people like her shouldnt breed and its a shame we cant notice people like her untill its to late. i work with a piece of scum like that. his name is joeseph knotts. he claimed to be the cousin of that poor woman shanekia watson who was found murdered in a church parking lot in phoenix. he said his mom and dad were going to take her three kids and raise them. then he said his aunt and grandama were going to do it. i talked to his sister and she said they only knew shanika from church and she wasnt family. what kinda POS would take an unholy crime and use it to get otta work. i guess people like the woman who jumped on I-17. People if ur nuts then move outta the USA and for god sakes DONT BREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its a sad thing when people like her do things like that. people like that should be forced to become sterile. that poor woman found murdered in a church parking lot here in phoenix was a tradgedy but whats worse is i work with a guy who lied about being her cousin just so he could get outta work. he said his parents were gaonna take her kids in and raise them. this POS is just as bad as the woman who jumped onto I-17. his name is joe knotts. he works at cardinals stadium. anyhow the people who struck this woman and her family are the ones who will suffer the trama of this and my heart goes out to them!!!!!!!!!!!!

According the the Maricopa Superior Court web site, she was just convicted of a crime in December. Probably why she lost her kids, especially if it was drug related.

What's wrong with some of you? How is this good, evilbetty? Although you may be full of hatred, the children will miss their mom. No matter how much you or the court system think she is unfit; they most likely love her more than anyone in the world. Children (young) are like that. So, you see, they are the only victims. Still rejoicing over her death?

I am a neighbor of this poor family that is enduring this tragic loss! My heart goes out to them all!! Brenda has left behind beautiful children that have already experienced the tragic loss of their father due to an unfortunate motorcycle accident years ago! My heart goes out to the kids most of all! But, I beg of people NOT to speculate and to please be considerate of the family that is going through this tragic time! Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all!!!!

This is a sad event that has happened! Shame on all of you that have anything else to say other than your prayers go out to this family. You don't know their situation or what caused this women to feel the only way to deal with her situation is to commit suicide. I am glad to see you all have led such a perfect life without any wrong doings or have not made bad choices in your life!! I pray for this family and hope they get the help they will need to deal with such a tragic situation.

I completely agree with statho , jenny , and wanderingypc. These others? I am ashamed to be of the same species. In fact ? I might deny it if pressed. Imagine if this womans precious and innocent children were to read a few of these azzanine comments! Sterilization? What planet are these idiots from? They make me retch! They are like a disease that grows and mutates and makes this world appear hopeless until SOMEBODY human with heart comes along and SHUTS THEM UP! After that ? they can be as rotten and foul and cruel as they want to be. They are exposed. The things that they say and the way that they say them? Are hurtful. And they better stop. People are getting tired of putting up with that trash. Bless the babies , the family , and the deceased. And a special prayer for the idiots that don't know how to be gentle and understanding.

In 2005 i lost custody of my 3 children. I cant even begin to explain the pain i went though. However some people are stronger then others. I guess i was one of the stronger one's. The courts gave me my children back in may of 2009! They take them away for a reason, and thats not for being a good mother. It takes time to earn your trust again.
