PHOENIX (AP) -- A Peoria couple accused of severely malnourishing two adopted daughters, forcing them to sleep in a backyard tent either nude or only in a diaper, have pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges.

Johann Glenn Jorg and Kimery Lynn Jorg entered their pleas Monday morning in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Peoria police say Child Protective Services visiting their home May 30 called authorities after finding a 13-year-old girl and 11-year-old girl emaciated.

The girls' punishments allegedly included hour-long running sessions in the outdoor heat and memorization of Bible verses.

The couple was arrested on suspicion of child abuse.

Their next court date is a pretrial conference scheduled for Aug. 11.
