TEMPE, Ariz. -- Firefighters had to extricate a woman who was hit by a light rail train near Apache Boulevard and Smith Road in Tempe Tuesday morning.

Tempe police responded to the accident at the Smith Martin-Apache Light Rail Station around 11 a.m.

Tempe and Chandler firefighters worked together to extricate the pedestrian.

Tempe police spokeswoman Molly Enright said the woman was conscious and breathing. She was transported to a hospital, but her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

At this time, it is not clear how the woman ended up trapped under the train.

The station was closed for a short time and METRO Light Rail implemented "bus bridges" to ferry passengers between the Dorsey and Sycamore light rail stations.

The collision caused 20-minute delays in both directions.

Police have removed the street restrictions and said normal traffic flow has been restored to both directions of Apache Boulevard.
