PHOENIX -- A man was in extremely critical condition Wednesday night after being hit by a car in a Phoenix intersection, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

It occurred at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road.

Police said the man, who has not yet been identified, tried to cross 16th Street while the light was green for traffic and was struck by a car traveling north on 16th Street.

The pedestrian flew a couple hundred feet, leaving a trail of clothing.

Police said the driver, a woman in her 50s, pulled over immediately. They also said she was not impaired or distracted.

She told police she didn't see the man, who was wearing dark clothing.

"It sounds like from some of the witnesses that they had seen him wandering around in the street earlier this evening, and it did appear that he could possibly have been intoxicated," Phoenix police Lt. Tracey Miller said. "That may have been why he chose to cross when he wasn't supposed to."

The fire department said the man was not breathing and CPR was performed.
