PHOENIX (AP) -- Paradise Valley will begin charging residents a yearly fee to pay for fire and emergency medical services beginning in January.

The new fees recently approved by the town council will range from $30 to $50 per month depending on the size of the home. They are intended to cover a $3 million shortfall in the amount the town has available to pay Phoenix to provide the service and to pay debt on two fire stations built in 2008. .

Finance Director Scot McCarty tells the Arizona Republic that about 90 percent of the money will pay for preparedness and the rest to actual costs of emergencies.

The first bills will be mailed in January. About 5,300 homes are in the town. Vacant lots and non-residential properties also will be billed.
