PHOENIX -- Police say a man was shot in the leg by an officer outside Phoenix Children's Hospital early Saturday morning.
Phoenix police were called to the hospital near 20th Street and Thomas Road shortly after 3 a.m. for a trespassing report, according to spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos.
Salvador Max Ramirez, 24, was reportedly drinking on the property and kept returning despite being contacted three times by hospital security. Police said he provoked security guards by saying profanities while holding a bottle in a threatening manner.
Police said Ramirez fled the hospital when officers arrived and was chased to 20th Street and Virginia Avenue. He reportedly bent down and made a furtive movement toward his waistband, and was shot in the leg by an officer as he stood up.
Ramirez then allegedly threw rocks at the officers and began running again, but he was eventually taken into custody near 17th and Yale streets.
Police said he did not have a gun in his waistband.
Ramirez was transported to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Martos.
He was booked on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and trespassing, Martos said.
Officers had minor injuries but were not treated.
