PHOENIX -- A 22-year-old man is accused of beating his 3-year-old stepdaughter because she was back-talking and not eating her dinner.
Corey Rasean Daniels was charged with four counts of child abuse after Phoenix police say he severely beat the child with his fists and a belt.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a home near 48th Street and Warner Road late Thursday afternoon and found the child unresponsive.
The girl was transported to a local hospital. Doctors said she had multiple skull fractures, bruises, retinal hemorrhages, and bleeding and swelling in the brain. She is listed in extremely critical condition.
Detectives learned that Daniels was taking care of the child while her mother was at work.
According to court documents, Daniels admitted punching her in the chest, arms and legs.
Daniels told police he struck the girl because she did not want to eat her hot dog and was back-talking.
