Map: Cab hits pedestrians
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police said a pedestrian who was hit by a taxicab early Tuesday morning got up off the ground and assaulted the driver.
Sgt. Mike Pooley said Ahmed Suliman, 27, and a woman were crossing against the light at Mill Avenue and Sixth Street at about 2:30 a.m. when they both were struck by the southbound cab.
They were bumped and knocked to the ground.
Pooley said Suliman was upset and went to confront the cab driver. He opened the driver's side door and allegedly assaulted the 59-year-old man.
The cab driver's shirt was ripped off and he sustained cuts and bruises to his face and body, but he did not go to a hospital.
Suliman and the woman received minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Both pedestrians were issued civil citations for crossing the street. Suliman also was cited for misdemeanor assault.
The taxi driver, who was working for Dollar Cab, was not cited. Pooley said the driver was not impaired and there was nothing to indicate it was anything more than an accident.
