PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are investigating a crash that left a man dead Thursday night and searching for a passenger who might be injured.
According to police, a silver Toyota Solara was speeding down a side street near McDowell Road when it ran a stop sign at 35th Avenue and was T-boned by a southbound SUV. The car then went spinning into a Circle K parking lot and collided with a blue or black van.
The van fled the scene and has not been located.
The driver of the Solara was taken to a hospital where he later died. Police said he smelled of alcohol. He has been identified as Alejandro Arturo Montes, 58.
Two females in the SUV, ages 14 and 18, received minor injuries.
Police said Montes' passenger fled the scene on foot for unknown reasons. The passenger is believed to be injured because of the amount of blood at the scene.
"He could have a warrant out for his arrest. He could have maybe gathered up a bunch of bottles inside the car and tried to take off with evidence. He may just be flat-out scared," Phoenix police Lt. John White said. "There's a myriad of reasons why someone may run, but our main concern is right now, because of the blood pattern, we feel he has a significant injury and we have an obligation to try and find him."
Police searched the area with a chopper and K-9s but were unable to locate the passenger.
