MESA, Ariz. – Mesa police arrested a man after they say he damaged a patrol car and assaulted an officer Monday night.
Oscar Alejandro Garcia, 23, was booked for attempted criminal damage, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Sgt. Tony Landato said officers contacted Garcia in the area of University and Mesa drives after receiving a report that he was overheard planning to commit a theft inside the nearby McDonald's restaurant.
They released the suspect and began to leave the area when Garcia jumped into the path of one of the moving patrol cars in what appeared to be an attempt to have the officer strike him, according to Landato.
Garcia was not hit or injured but was contacted again and issued a citation.
Garcia was holding a motorcycle helmet he claimed to have found earlier. Landato said he swung the helmet in an attempt to shatter the front headlight of the patrol car.
The light did not shatter but sustained scuff damage.
Officers informed Garcia that he was under arrest for attempted criminal damage to the vehicle. He then assaulted one of the officers by swinging his helmet, striking the officer in the side.
Officers took Garcia into custody after a brief struggle in which a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun fell from Garcia's waistband.
