PHOENIX -- Police say a 33-year-old female driver was impaired when she caused a fatal collision early Saturday morning.

The crash happened at approximately 1:30 on Cactus Road near 40th Street.

The female driver was speeding in a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer eastbound on Cactus Road when she slammed into the back of a 2006 Ford Expedition that was traveling in the same direction and in the same lane, according to Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Dept.

The Expedition was forced off the roadway and eventually struck a block wall and a tree. The 47-year-old male driver of the Expedition, identified as Christopher Kutcher, was killed.

The driver of the Blazer, Michelle Nicole Ayers, was transported to a local hospital as a precaution and processed for impairment. Holmes said preliminary tests indicated she had a blood alcohol level of more than three times the legal limit.

Ayers was released from the hospital and booked into jail on suspicion of one count of manslaughter, a class two felony.

Cactus Road was closed between 38th and 40th streets on Saturday morning.
