MESA, Ariz. -- The parents of two young children were arrested on endangerment charges after Mesa police officers allegedly found drug paraphernalia in their apartment near Brown Road and Country Club Drive.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers conducted a welfare check on two children, 8 months old and 2 years old, after their grandmother said she could not reach their mother by telephone, according to police spokesman Detective Steve Berry.
The grandmother told officers that the mother had a drug abuse problem.
Officers said the lights and television were on in the apartment, but no one answered the door.
Neighbors reported seeing the mother and children home earlier in the day.
Officers forced entry into the apartment after they were unable to locate any maintenance or management personnel. They found the children asleep on the living room floor and their parents were sleeping in a locked rear bedroom.
Crystal Driver and William Exley claimed they had taken a sleep aid to get some rest and said they did not hear the officers knocking.
Berry said neither had an explanation of why the children were unattended in the other room.
Drug paraphernalia and other dangerous items were located in the reach of the toddler, according to Berry.
Paramedics checked the children and said they were fine.
