MARICOPA, Ariz. (AP) -- An officer-involved shooting in the town of Maricopa Tuesday left one man wounded.

It all started when police received a call around 2:15 p.m. from a woman who said her husband responded to some bad news by threatening to kill himself.

She told police he had a weapon when he drove away from their home in his Mustang.

A police officer initiated a pursuit, but the man refused to stop. A short chase followed, and came to an end when the man's tires were punctured and deflated by stop-sticks.

When the car stopped, the man exited the vehicle, and that's when the officer opened fire, shooting the man in the chest.

"At this time, we don't have exactly what took place once the vehicle wrecked out," says Ricardo Alvarado of the Maricopa Police Department. "But due to the propensity for violence the subject had by pulling a weapon on himself in front of his wife, and allegedly making statements that he was going to hurt himself, we believe that our officer was in fear for his safety."

The man was taken to Maricopa Medical Center in critical condition. His name hasn't been released. The officer was not hurt.
