CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Chandler police say an officer-involved shooting Monday night has been ruled a suicide.

Detective Seth Tyler said Adam Buckner shot himself in the head during a confrontation with police near Rural Road and Chandler Boulevard.

Buckner reportedly pointed his weapon at a neighbor in the 5000 block of West Jupiter Way then rode off on a bike. As Buckner was fleeing, he stopped and turned his gun on Officer Kyle Kinnaman, who drew his service weapon.

Tyler said Buckner moved into a tactical position, partially concealing himself from the officer, then cycled a round from his .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol and fired one round into his own head.

When he heard the gunshot, Kinnaman believed Buckner was firing at him and a second officer who had just arrived at the scene, according to Tyler. Kinnaman immediately fired one round, striking Buckner in the torso.

Autopsy results revealed Buckner died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Tyler said the bullet strike from the officer's weapon was ruled a potentially survivable wound.

Police do not know why Buckner threatened his neighbor, but other area residents said Buckner had a history of erratic behavior.
