GILBERT, Ariz. – An off-duty Gilbert police officer crashed his vehicle into a church Wednesday morning.

Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Sanger said the officer apparently had some kind of medical problem prior to the crash.

The officer's personal vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the Victory Tabernacle Pentecostal Church at the corner of Lindsay Road and Mesquite Street at around 10 a.m.

Sanger said the SUV was still running when police arrived on the scene.

Sanger said exhaust fumes were building inside the SUV by the time police opened the doors and got the children and driver out of the vehicle.

No one inside the church was injured.

The driver was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. The children were not injured.
